Total Vocal Freedom was founded with the primary purpose of empowering singers to be totally free in their vocal expression.
We offer an integrative and holistic approach to singing which focuses on four areas:
- Body Freedom
- Natural Breathing
- Deep Practice
- Performing Success
What about vocal technique?
Total Vocal Freedom is not meant to be a substitute for a solid and functional vocal technique.
Though we do offer classes in vocal technique in many of our courses and programs (taught by our vocal technique expert Michael Hanko), we specialize in the 4 areas above because we believe that without this foundational knowledge and training, singers are limited as to what is possible with their technique.
The Total Vocal Freedom Method draws its inspiration from:
- Alexander Technique
- Intelligent Music Education
- Transformational Education
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Modern Neuroscience
The TVF Educational Philosophy
Our educational philosophy contains seven core beliefs:
1. The Whole Singer
We address every aspect of what it means to be a successful singer – mind, body, spirit and voice.
In our programs, you will learn that you sing and perform best when you acknowledge that you are one, whole integrated self.
2. Indirect Works Better
Though it’s counterintuitive, an indirect approach is often the most direct path to a goal.
TVF students have discovered that when they get their whole system working harmoniously, long-standing vocal problems indirectly resolve themselves.
3. Nature’s Way is Best
True vocal freedom comes from cooperating with nature’s design of your body.
In TVF programs, you will learn about how your body is designed to move naturally, without harmful interference leading to greater freedom and ease.
4. Student-Focused Learning
Each student is treated as a unique individual and their wishes and desires drive the learning process.
TVF teachers guide and coach you using an exploratory process that helps you do what you want to do with more freedom.
5. Experiments Deepen Learning
Playful experiments make up the heart of the TVF work.
We believe that when students are encouraged to make discoveries for themselves, learning in deeper, more meaningful and longer-lasting.
6. A Commitment to Constructive Thinking
Constructive thinking is more than just positive thinking. Constructive thinking is generate and creative and identifies what you do want rather than what you don’t want.
Constructive thinking forms the basis of YES Plans, which are step-by-step guides for singing and performing success.
7. Celebration is Essential for Learning
We believe that singers thrive when they are nurtured and supported versus criticized and put down.
In TVF programs, you will learn how to cultivate greater self-kindness by consciously celebrating your efforts and achievements, no matter how big or small.
Not only is celebrating more fun than criticizing yourself, it also helps you learn faster!
